Where should you begin your logistics career?

Most people would automatically assume that a logistics career means a life on the road as a HGV driver. However, we know that this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the transport and logistics industry offers an incredible range of roles. There is always something to suit your specific requirements. Whether you're hoping to become a qualified Class 1 HGV driver or have aspirations to work in transport management, there is a way into the industry for everyone.

The first steps to becoming an HGV driver

The first thing to do if you are looking to become a driver is to gain the necessary qualifications. You will need to have a full driving license and be over 18 years of age. You will then need to apply for a provisional lorry/bus licence. Once you’ve got the provisional licence you are required to pass the 4 tests that make up the full driver CPC qualification.

It is important to remember that the CPC licence is only valid for 5 years. As a result, this will have to be renewed throughout your career as a driver. The expiration date on the CPC licence means that you will need to maintain a level of driving to meet the requirements at the end of every 5 year period. Once you've completed the CPC licence, there are a number of other qualifications if you plan to expand your skillset.

Work your way up through warehousing

However, it is possible to begin a logistics career without requiring any qualifications. In fact, it is completely possible to create a career in the logistics industry that doesn't involve driving. Many people looking to begin their career start out working in warehouse operations. They then gradually build up their experience and qualifications. Whilst this is not required, it will open far more doors if you decide to start from warehouse operations before moving onto another area.

One of the most common licences to work towards is the forklift driver licence. This is an incredibly useful skill to develop your employment potential. Arguably, it will make you significantly more appealing to logistics companies. Additionally, this can be a very useful additional qualification if you intend on moving into HGV driving at a later date in your career.

Learning the ropes from the office

For those who are looking for a position that does not require manual work, there are plenty of office roles available. With so many vehicles, parcels and pallets to manage, it is important to have a strong team to keep track of their movements. Beginning your logistics career in an office role allows you to see and understand every aspect of the process in a way that many drivers cannot.

Office-based positions also offer a lot of scope to try a number of different types of roles. This could range from HR to sales or goods and supply chain management. As a result, it is far easier to find the perfect career path to suit you. Creating a career in logistics management gives so many opportunities to enjoy a diverse range of roles and responsibilities every day.
